How to Buy a Home Theater

pictures of a home theaterHow to Buy a Home Theater System at The Absolute Best Price

Want to know how to get the best price on a brand-name home theater system? This article shows you a simple, foolproof system.

Getting the best prices on a quality home theater system is a piece of cake … once you know how. Here’s how to get rock bottom discount prices on brand-name home theater systems.

Home Theater System

A home theater system consists of a television, a receiver, an amplifier, speakers, and can include a DVD player, a video cassette player, and a video game player.

You can purchase a home theater as a single unit, or if you’re picky you can purchase individual components to create your own personalized home theater system.

Compare Home Theater Systems

The first step in buying a home theater system is to think about what you want and how much you want to spend.

Do you want a large screen TV or a medium screen TV? Do you want a tube TV, a plasma TV, or an LCD TV? Do you want a stereo audio system or a surround sound system? Do you want all the bells and whistles or do you want a simple home theater system?

Once you have an idea of what you want, you need to take a look at what’s available.

Take a trip to your local discount store or electronics store and check out the home theater systems that fall within your price range. Turn on the TVs and try out the controls. Test the speakers systems. Try out the DVD players and video game players, then find a knowledgeable sales person and get their opinion on which models they recommend.

After you decide which components and which models you want, the next step is to go online and see what’s available.

Comparison Shop for Home Theater Systems

There are a number of online websites that compare prices on everything under the sun. Not only do these sites give you a price comparison, they also give you product specifications, product reviews, and a whole host of information you need to make an intelligent buying decision.

The website I use displays the price from low to high on specific products so I can see which online and offline store has the best deal. You can even plug in you zip code to and get shipping costs.

If I’m not familiar with a particular store, I can view comments from people who have dealt with that store to see if it’s reputable and will give me good service.

I can also get expert reviews, and more importantly, consumer reviews so I can see what people who actually use the product think of it.

When I’m done researching a product and have found the best price, the cheapest shipping cost, and a reputable retailer, I make my purchase online using my credit card. All of the sites listed on the website I use have a credit card encryption system so I know I won’t have any problems with someone stealing my credit card information.

Shopping this way I’ve saved hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars on everything from stereos to big-screen TVs.

Bottom Line

If you want to find a brand-name home theater system at the best possible price, through a dealer who will give you great service, click on the link listed below and try out the comparison service I use. You’ll be glad you did.

Do I Need An HDMI Cable For HD

Hdmi For Your Hdtv And Blu-ray Disk Player Why use hdmi cable

There are plenty of people who ask why it is a good idea to connect their HDTV and DVD devices with an HDMI connection. Simply put, it’s completely digitized.

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is the next step in the progression of audio-visual connections, transmitting completely uncompressed audio and video signals from your source equipment to your high definition television (HDTV).

In place of the countless connections you would have with a component video setup (the group of Red/White/Yellow sockets) or DVI, HDMI uses only one little socket, so you won’t have to purchase anything else to make the connection for your images and sound.

What does this do for you, since you are the one purchasing all of this perplexing new equipment? This means you don’t have to buy numerous cables for it to function; it only requires one cable connected to your HDMI-equipped gadget (such as a Blu-ray disk player, Xbox 360, WII, HD cable or satellite box, A/V surround receiver, or another item) and the HDTV.

It is as easy as it could be. Not only will you enjoy incredible video quality at up to 1080p, you are also going to be amazed by the uncompressed surround audio you are going to experience. Now you might be thinking, "But the component video cable setup I am using now seems just fine on my HDTV," and yes, that’s probably correct. But your component video cable is incapable of connecting a Blu-ray player to an HDTV and taking advantage of all of the benefits offered by the new HD technology. With a television that is larger than 50 inches, making the switch to Blu-ray and going up to 1080p is going to be just like washing your windows. While it is possible to ignore spots over time, it’s better when they are gone completely.

The following will illustrate why HDMI is the best choice. Get any movie on a normal DVD and also on Blu-ray. First, use the component and HDMI connections with a normal set of audio cables attached to the player. Sit back and view the film on the normal DVD setting. The sound will be great and it will be visually appealing. Now, switch over to the Blu-ray disc, set your Blu-ray player to 1080p, which will match your new HDTV, and verify that your surround sound system can accommodate newer audio formats such as DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio. Then watch the movie another time. The change is amazing. You achieve a video quality that is unbelievably lifelike, and the master audio soundtrack is puts you right there in the studio. The unparalleled depth of audio and video quality is what makes an HDMI connection the only way to go when you set up your new HDTV equipment!

Here is yet another great reason to use HDMI — you can use it with a new A/V digital sound receiver. HDMI accommodates both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio tracks. This is a function neither your Toslink optical nor your coaxial digital cables could ever accomplish, and it’s a truly incredible advance over your regular surround track on DVD. While things are panning around your 5.1 or 7.1 theater, they are doing so in a well-managed manner that fully immerses you in the audio-visual experience. There is an immediate difference right from the start.

Now you understand why, if you can use it, HDMI will make your connections less complicated, getting rid of the tangled mess of wires behind your equipment while providing you with incredible video and audio on your new 1080p television and Blu-ray disc player.

What is Blue-Ray Disc Technology

Blu-ray Players: are they that Good?

If you are a movie buff (you are, aren’t you?), you may want to look into the new Blu-ray players. They will, of course play back Blu-ray discs in astounding fashion, but what may be even more exciting, they also make your old standard DVDs look like High Definition DVDs. best blue-ray players

Thinking about purchasing one of the new Blu-ray DVD players? Are they worth it? If you are a true audiophile, or home theater buff the answer may be in this article.

The Blu-ray players are the next-generation digital video platform. The players and their discs can record, store and play back high-definition video and digital audio, as well as computer data. Their big advantage being the enormous amount of information a Blu-ray disc can hold.

A single-layer Blu-ray disc is about the same size as a standard DVD. However it can hold up to 27 GB of data. This equates to more than two hours of high-definition video or about thirteen hours of standard video.

Another difference is: the standard DVD player has a red laser that reads the DVD. With the Blu-ray DVD player it is a blue laser (technically violet) that reads the disc.

The Blu-ray discs have a much superior picture, and sound than the standard DVD discs. And, best of all they are indestructible. Something the standard DVDs are not. There is a video out that has a fantastic demonstration of this.

First, steel wool was vigorously rubbed over the playing surface of a Blu-ray disc. Then the disc was played, no problem, it played back fine. Next, came the ball point pen. They wrote all over the playing surface…no problem with playback.

After the ball point pen came the pizza cutter. You would think that this would be the end of the disc, but it wasn’t….played back fine. Then came the butcher knife…..no problem, the disc is still around. The last demo was trying to burn the Blu-ray disc. That didn’t work either. The disc was still in excellent playing condition.
The one thing that movie buffs, or audio buffs worry about is a damaged CD or DVD disc. I loaned, my bad, one of my favorite DVDs out to someone, who I thought, would take care of it. They didn’t and I had to replace it.

When you rent out standard DVDs, unless you are the first one to rent them, they usually look like people eat off of them and then use them as Frisbees. Have you ever gotten a bad DVD and it won’t play on your DVD player when you get it home?

The point being, wouldn’t it be nice to know that, no matter what happens to a Blu-ray DVD disc it will faithfully play back like it is brand-new?

Think about the last time you went to your local movie rental store that there was a small section, off by itself, marked "Blue-ray" DVDs. Of course, unless you have a Blu-ray DVD player you probably walked right by them. Right now there is hardly what you would want to call a ton of Blu-ray discs out there, but this is changing rapidly.

It’s a new and very exciting technology and one that is here to stay. Oh, by the way, that small section of the movie rental store will be getting much, much larger by the week.

One studio, for example, Warner Brothers has more or less bagged the HD DVD format in favor of a Blue-ray exclusive. This means more movies than ever are going to be coming out in that format from them. Others will follow suit.

The advent of the Blu-ray players and discs are nothing but exciting. We think you will find them exciting, too! You can purchase a quality Blu-ray player in the $300.00 price range. It will even enhance your current standard DVDs to High Definition playback. Make sure your current TV is compatible to receive the full benefits of Blu-ray players. If playing your CDs or burned CDs with MP3 files are an issue, make sure the model you choose has that option. Many even in the lower price brackets do.

If you want the experience the best in movie and audio reproduction via your Home Theater, or computer consider a Blu-ray DVD Player. It breeds excitement. Read more about Blu-ray DVD players on my lens @ http://www.squidoo.com/blue-ray-players.

Movie Theatre Posters

Movie Posters – For That Unique Finishing Touch To Your Home Theater custom poster frames

Poster Presentation – Framing, Mounting and Light Boxes

Poster presentation is a most important aspect that should be taken into consideration when hanging a poster of your favorite movie on a wall. Appropriate presentation that matches with the rest of the room decor can help bring about the movie experience, but not only.

Presenting your newly acquired movie poster by framing or mounting will result in a more attractive finished product in any room. In particular, framed movie posters are most appropriate in a ’shared’ room home theater e.g. a living room or a bedroom home theater.

However, mounting and in particular framing a poster, offers a further important advantage – it also represents an important step towards helping your posters stay nice for much longer.

While both frames and mounts offer a great way of presenting a more attractive finish in any room, yet in the case of a dedicated home theater room, the ultimate in movie poster presentation is the backlit poster light box. The use of a backlit box will better help bring about the cinematic ‘feeling’ into your home.

Movie poster light boxes add a unique finishing touch to your home theater, or in that case, anywhere you want to display your favorite poster.

The Poster Light Box:

The classical way to illuminate movie posters for display is from behind. Most poster light boxes operate in this manner by having a light source mounted on the rear side of a box frame. A diffuser plate is used to help eliminate the formation of possible hot spots of light over the movie poster area.

These poster light boxes are also referred to as ‘backlit poster boxes’ and are normally designed to take 1 Sheet posters. The latter are typically 27 inches in width by 40 to 41 inches in height, depending on whether the poster is a pre 1983/1985 or otherwise. (More information on movie poster sizes is available at Practical Home Theater Guide under the Movie Poster section of the site; ref. to the ‘link detials’ at the end of this article).

Take care, however! Not all one-sheet size movie posters are best suited for display in a backlit poster light box. Why?

One sheet comes in either single-sided or double-sided prints, with the latter being designated as ‘DS’ 1-Sheet. While it is possible to mount either type in a poster light box, yet the best posters to use in a backlit poster light box are double-sided posters.

DS 1 Sheet posters have printing on both the front and the back of the paper stock, with the printing on the backside being in precise alignment with that on the front and a mirror image of the printing on the front side.

Light from behind the 1-sheet poster will have to pass through both prints, with the poster acting as if it is a strip of film. The two prints on either side of the poster will render for a more robust and rich illumination of the poster artwork.

That is not to say that the cheaper and more common single-sided posters are not suitable for use in backlit light boxes. It is just that one-sided 1-Sheet posters look somewhat washed-out when illuminated from behind.

Features of DTV Converter Boxes

Tips For Choosing A Dtv Converter Box DTV Converter Boxes Cheap

Time is ticking away. There are only 224 days left until the end of most analog television broadcasts, and many of you still aren’t ready.

"TV is about to become complicated," said Phillip Swan, author of TV dot COM: The Future of Interactive TV and founder of TVPredictions.com.

Consumer concerns over buying and installing converter boxes that will allow televisions to pick up the new digital signals are coming in force, said Swan and Joel Kelsey, policy analyst for Consumers Union.

"We’re hearing a lot of confusion in the marketplace," Kelsey said.

Over 1 million of the $40 DTV coupons offered by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration have expired without being used, according to the NTIA website. (The coupons have a 90-day expiration date by law.) These coupons are available to help offset the cost of purchasing a DTV converter and are available to all households in the US.

Many consumers also are finding out (often too late) that many big box retailers only stock one or two of the coupon eligible boxes which leaves no room for comparison shopping. Lots of stores are also not carrying enough stock to satisfy consumer demand leaving folks out of luck once their coupons expire.

And some are finding they need an upgrade to their antenna once they buy the converter boxes to get some of the channels they had over the air before, Swan said.

Buying a DTV converter box
Here are a few good tips on how to choose a digital converter box:

Don’t wait. You need to begin start shopping immediately after ordering your coupons, which take two to three weeks to be mailed. This will give you time to find the best model to meet your needs so you can be prepared once your coupons arrive. Be aware that coupons expire after 90 days. One million coupons have already expired without being redeemed.

Be aware of the features you need. If it’s important to you to have a good program guide, a universal remote control or a button on your remote to choose whether you want your programming in full screen or letterbox, you must keep those features in mind when reading reviews or shopping.

Shopping online gives you more choices. "We ended up buying a lot online because it was the easiest way," CU’s Kelsey said. Many big-box retailers have only one or two brands available at their stores, while online retailers will have many more brands and models so you can find the features you need at a price that fits your budget. This can also help save you money buy not burning gas to drive around the stores in your area shopping for boxes.

Get an Energy Star rated product. Digital converter boxes that have earned the Energy Star label by the Environmental Protection Agency consume no more than 8 watts of electricity in "on" mode and 1 in "sleep" mode. They also automatically power down after four hours or less of user inactivity. Look for the label to confirm that it has met program qualifications.

Install your converter box before upgrading your antenna. Don’t buy a new antenna until you have determined whether you need it. If you live far from the broadcast tuners and are not receiving all of your desired channels with the converter box, consider getting a smart antenna, Sedmak advised. To see whether you may have poor reception, go to antennaweb.org and type in your ZIP code. The Web site provides a mapping program from the Consumer Electronics Association and the National Association of Broadcasters that locates the proper outdoor antenna to receive your local television broadcast channels. SummitSource.com also carries a HUGE selection of antennas so you can receive crystal clear HDTV broadcasts for free.

Best converter boxes
Consumer Reports recently rated the best TV converter box in a variety of areas, including the quality of the program guide, whether it has a universal remote control, whether it makes adding new channels easy and whether an AV cable is included. The models that ranked at the top for best picture quality, defined as those capable of images that come close to DVD quality are the following:

The Sansonic FT300A, which retails for $54.95 and the Philco TB 100HH9, which retails for $59.95. Both of these units are available at many online retailers for your convenience.

Consumer Review Indoor HDTV Antenna

Indoor Tv Antennas For Hdtv Reception hdtv antenna amplified indoor

Dozens of millions of TV sets in the US receive local channels via off-air broadcasts. And this number is growing as more and more networks offer free of charge HDTV broadcasts over the air. Over the air HDTV is totally free and can be received with a simple off-air TV antenna.

The proper antenna choice is dictated by numerous factors, most of them are derived from your location. The most important step in HDTV antenna selection process is to find out what broadcasts are available in your area, which frequencies (channels) they are transmitted on, and which CEA color area you are located in with respect to the transmitting towers. Consult HDTV Antenna Labs guide and follow the selection process.

In most cases an outdoor antenna is the way to go. Indoor antenna reception quality is always inferior to the quality obtained with an outdoor antenna, especially in remote areas. However, of you live in a HD signal saturated area in the immediate proximity to the towers, then an indoor HDTV antenna may work great for you.

There are many reasons for using indoors antennas, most of which have to do with the inability of installing an outdoor television antenna. Indoor HDTV antennas are especially popular with individuals living in apartments. Your home may simply not have the space to mount an outdoor antenna, and there are several indoor models that serve as space savers while providing you with reception.

Many individuals choose to purchase an indoor TV antenna instead of its outdoor counterpart for aesthetic reasons. Some housing developments and neighborhoods have gone so far as to ban outdoor TV antennas, especially neighborhoods of historical homes. For this reason, and indoor HDTV antenna still allows you all the fantastic qualities of HDTV while not marring the physical look of your home with an unsightly antenna.

Normally, indoor antennas do not require any maintenance and the troubleshooting is trivial. This is not always the case with outdoor antennas. Strong winds, and stormy weather in general, may cause damages to rooftop antennas. Professional assistance in the roof antenna installation is recommended.

The major issue with indoor TV antennas is a poor reception of weak HD signals. Performance of any particular indoor antenna type or model is hardly predictable because it depends on so many factors – construction materials of the building, the exact placement in the house, other objects located near the antenna. For these reasons, Consumer Electronics Associations (CEA) does not rate indoor antennas by CEA color areas as they do for outdoor antennas. With indoor antennas nothing is guaranteed.

Although an outdoor antenna can potentially pull in more TV channels, its higher cost, bigger size and installation hassle can turn your decision in favor of an indoor antenna. Audiovox, RCA, Samsung these are just a few of many indoor HDTV antenna manufacturers. All of them offer similar products. For VHF TV channels 2 to 13 all you have is the well known rabbit ears antenna. Anything more sophisticated than that in VHF band would be simply too large to place indoors. UHF antennas are smaller and a consumer has many antenna types to choose from. The most basic (and poorly performing) is the UHF loop antenna. More sophisticated UHF antenna types are directional log-periodic and scatter plane antennas.

When considering the particular antenna types and brands, be sure to research a specific model before you buy. Look at customer reviews and compare antenna specifications carefully.

Speakers for Home Theater System

Home Theater Speakers: Understanding the cheap home theater speakers Bass

The bass line is the backbone of any audio system. This article describes what bass sound is and why it is important to a home theater experience.

We all know what bass can do to a movie soundtrack. It can create drama, danger, even a feeling of strength depending on the visuals that go along with it. Bass is one of the most important elements of any audio format because it provides balance and contrast to the overall score of a movie, television show, even commercial. Quality bass in a sound system is impressive while not being overpowering.

In a 5.1 surround sound system, one of the most common for home theater installations, the ‘.1′ is the bass. The speaker for the bass sounds on a soundtrack is called a subwoofer. Lower frequency sound waves use a larger diaphragm to move the amount of air it takes to make these sounds. While smaller speakers can produce these lower frequency waves, they typically cannot produce the kind of quality that one would expect from a quality theater. Smaller speakers can often sound tinny when trying to produce these lower sounds. Large home theatre speaker towers are capable of handling this part of the soundtrack though it may require the reduction of sound quality from the mid and high range frequency speakers.

Choosing a good sound system with a quality bass speaker is not impossible, even for people who do not have a lot of experience. First, start with the subwoofer. Homeowners will need to consider whether they require a passive sub or an active woofer. A passive subwoofer does not need a separate power supply. Rather it uses power from the same amp that is driving the other home theater speakers. Volume from the amplifier can usually be controlled, there is less control overall with a passive sub. An active sub has a separate power supply. This means that the signal received from the amplifier/receiver is enhanced by the subwoofer itself, without taking any of the power from the other speakers.

Once you have your home theater subwoofer and other speakers picked out, lay them out to get the best sound from each. Bass sound is omni-directional, meaning that it goes out from the speaker in all direction. To decide where to place the subwoofer, put it in the same position that you will be sitting in, whether it is on the couch facing the television screen or in a home theater chair. Turn on a favorite film then move around your room and listen. Find the spot that the bass sounds best and move your subwoofer to that location. It can be set on the ground, on a shelf or off of a wall depending on where you feel the best low tone sound is heard. Since the sounds are going out and bouncing around the room in roughly the same direction, the sound should be great when you get it into place.

We’ve all heard the laments of mothers and fathers forced to deal with the incessant thumping and pounding of boom box bass lines from their adolescent’s car or room. There is something to say for the potential for this phenomenon to occur in a home theater as well. While walls, ceiling and floor will generally block high sound frequencies from leaving the room, they can actually increase the volume of the lower range sounds. While laying out your speakers, try to also find the right volume balance for all frequencies that your family can enjoy the sound quality a bass can provide without driving your neighbors crazy.

Wireless Home Theater Systems

Get a Wireless Home Theater System at The Best Price Possible home theater system with wireless speakers

Want to find a wireless speaker home theater system that won’t cost you an arm and a leg? This article shows you how to get one at the best possible price.

A wireless speaker home theater system allows you the freedom to place your speakers anywhere in a room without having to figure out how to hide the speaker wires.
There are two types of wireless speaker home theater systems – add-on systems and integrated systems.

Add-On Wireless Home Theater System

If you already have a home theater system you can purchase an add-on system consisting of a transmitter, a receiver, and surround-sound speakers if you don’t already have them.

The transmitter is connected to the home theater amplifier and sends out the audio signal to a receiver. The receiver, which is connected to the rear speakers, picks up the signal from the transmitter and sends it to those speakers.

Most wireless home theater systems have front speakers and a subwoofer that are connected to the amplifier with audio cables, and rear speakers that are connected to the receiver to create surround-sound audio.

You can purchase a decent amplifier/receiver system for less than $100.

Integrated Wireless Home Theater System

If you’re in the market for a new wireless home theater system, you can purchase a complete system consisting of an amplifier with built-in transmitter, a front center speaker, two front side speakers, a subwoofer, and two rear surround-sound speakers. Some systems also include a DVD player.

Prices for an integrated wireless home theater system start at $175 and go up to $2,000.

Comparing Wireless Home Theater Systems

The best way to get the best price on a wireless home theater system is to try them out in person, then go comparison shopping online.

Start by taking a trip to your local discount or electronics store so you can try out the various wireless home theater system models. Test the controls and listen to the models in your price range until you find the one you like best.

After you find a system you like, go home, fire up your computer, and start comparison shopping online.

Comparing models and prices at an online comparison shopping site will save you countless hours of going store to store or surfing all the Internet stores. Here, in one place, you can find prices for everything under the sun from hundreds of online and offline stores.

The comparison shopping site I use will not only give you a price comparison on wireless home theater systems, it will also give you product specifications, reviews by audio experts, and consumer reviews by people who actually own the product so you’ll know how good the system is.

When you find the store with the lowest price, you can get consumer reviews of that store so you’ll know if it’s reputable and will give you good service.

Some stores even have a lowest-price guarantee so if you find a better price later you can get a rebate on the price difference from that store.

I’ve purchased a number of high-ticket items this way and have always gotten good service and a great price.

Plasma TV Buying Guides

Plasma TV FAQ – What You Should Know About Plasma TV how does a plasma screen tv work

Looking to buy a plasma TV? This article explains what a plasma TV is and where you can get one at the lowest price.

Plasma TVs are one of this year’s hottest electronic products. Here’s a FAQ that explains what a plasma TV is and where you can get one at the lowest price.

What is plasma TV?

A plasma TV is a television with a screen that’s composed of hundreds-of-thousands of tiny gas-filled, colored cells. When electricity passes through the cells they light up and produce a TV picture.

What are the benefits of plasma TV?

The benefits of plasma TV are:

* Lifelike picture – Plasma TVs produce a picture that’s so realistic you think you’re watching a scene through a window.

* Slim design – Plasma TVs can be placed virtually anywhere in a room and can even be hung on a wall.

* Flat screen – Plasma TVs have a flat screen so there’s none of the distortion you get with curved screen TVs.

* Large size – Plasma TVs are available in sizes ranging from 37" up to 84."

* Widescreen design – Plasma TVs are made in widescreen format so they’re compatible with widescreen DVDs and HDTV.

* Side-angle viewing – Unlike projection TVs, plasma TVs can be watched from any angle without the picture fading.

* Multi-broadcast formats – Plasma TVs are compatible with HDTV, DTV, XGA, SVGA, and VGA broadcast signals.

How long do plasma TVs last?

Older plasma TVs had a screen life of 30,000 hours or less. The newer plasma TVs have a screen life of 60,000 hours.

Where can I get a plasma TV at a cheap price?

My advice is to take a trip to your local electronics store or discount store so you can check out plasma TVs in person. Then, when you find a model you like, go online and check out prices at a comparison shopping website. These sites give you prices from various retailers for anything you can think of.

The comparison site I use gives me prices from both online and offline retailers. It also gives me expert product reviews, reviews by consumers who own the products, and even reviews of the stores that carry the products so I know if the store I’m dealing with is reputable and will give me good service.

I recently purchased a flat screen TV through one of the retailers I found on this site that was $150 cheaper than the same TV I found at my local Wal-Mart. I also saved $85 on taxes (you don’t have to pay sales tax on online sites that don’t have a store in your state), and the shipping was free.

I’ve saved thousands of dollars on big-ticket items I’ve purchased online and, thanks to this site’s store ratings, have never had a problem.

HDTV Antenna Recommendations

How To Choose The Best Hdtv Antenna hdtv smart antenna

If you have just bought a HDTV you are probably looking for the best HDTV antenna. Well guess what? There is no such thing as a HDTV antenna, it’s just a buzzword made up by marketing people to sell antennas. However there are certain antennas that do better with a HDTV. There are a few things that you should know before you go looking for the best HDTV antenna to make sure that you get great picture quality. Nothing would be worse than having an expensive HDTV and then having lousy reception.

Outdoor Multi Directional Antennas

First up the best HDTV antenna is probably an outdoor antenna. There are indoor antennas that are quite popular but these are probably not the best HDTV antennas for everyone. If your house is not near enough the transmitting towers then you will have to keep changing the position of the antenna. Not something you want to do in the middle of a movie or even worse a live event. So stick to outdoor antennas to get the best HDTV antenna.

There are also multi directional and directional antennas. A directional antenna can pick up signals from further away but it must be faced in only one direction. So unless all the channels you want are being transmitted from the same direction you may need more than one directional antenna. A multi directional antenna has the advantage of being able to pick up signals from different directions and might be the better antenna for you.

Distances and Color Zones

If you live in a remote area then you will probably have to use a directional antenna. This will give you better reception and also cut down the interference of reflective buildings and mountains. Multi directional antenna are good to use if you are only a short distance or medium distance away from the transmitting towers. Any further and you will get bad reception with a multi directional antenna.

Another way to get the best HDTV antenna for your home is to determine what color zone you are in. The Consumer Electronics Association has seven color zones that categorize reception quality. The colors are yellow, green, light green, red, blue, violet and pink. Yellow areas have the best reception while pink has the worst. The Consumer Electronics Association recommends specific outdoor TV antenna for each color zone. Find out which color zone you are in and you will be able to find the best HDTV antenna for your home.

Reviews of HDTV Televisions

Choosing Your Hd Tv Set hdtv video art

Back in the day, when there were only analog TVs around, picking out your own set was a much less intimidating affair than it is today. Technology has gotten more complicated; today’s HD TV sets are much slicker and sleeker than their tube TV counterparts. They come packed with featuressurround sound, pc compatibility, digital tuners, etc.

For even the most technically adept, choosing the right TV is difficult. You have to wade through a quagmire of marketing hype, jargon and tech talk. You have to consider why you want a new TV, and of course, how high are you willing to go?
In the end, HD simply means a better picture. There are some important requirements to consider before you buy. Here’s a guide to the four different types of HD TV sets on the market today.

Direct View CRT: This is the TV we all know and love; it’s the type we grew up with. It’s the grand daddy of them all. Most of these are standard definition, although an increasing number are HD. However, without doubt, the tube TV is a dying breed. By federal law they are required to come equipped with digital tuners to receive DTV stations over the air, but the picture isn’t anything near what you would get with more modern HD TV sets. Direct-view TVs are also much bulkier and heavier than LCD’s and plasmas. Most stores don’t keep a large stock of tube TVs so you’re not likely to find much variety. The upside is that these are relatively cheap. So if you’re on tight budget, this would be your most economical choice. That being said, if you have more financial leeway, it’s better to invest in more modern technology.

Flat Panel LCD: These have revolutionized the TV industry. Flat screens can be hung on your wall like pieces of art, they can go above your mantelpiece or you can simply set them on a stand and enjoy the pristine sleekness of the form. Flat LCDs (liquid crystal display) are quite popular given their widespread availability and their competitive pricing. You can find 42 inch flat panel LCDs for around $700 these days. LCDs are also used as computer monitors. Their matte screens reflect less light than plasma screens, which means there is less danger of burn-in (which occurs when an image is etched permanently into the screen). LCDs are known for poor quality black levels as they use a backlight for illumination and there’s usually some light leak through the pixels.

Plasma Screens: These are known for their extremely top notch picture quality, with deep black levels and great color. Motion resolution is better than LCDs, however, you could argue that the difference is barely perceptible. Plasma screens are priced similarly to LCDs, however larger sized plasmas are generally less expensive than similarly sized LCDs. Plasmas are however, less energy efficient and they do tend to suffer from image burn-in.

Rear Projection TVs: Finally, we have the rear projection variety, which seem to offer the best price for larger screens. RPTVs use DLP technology or microchips. Within the set, light bounces off the chip via an internal lamp to produce color on the screen. These lamps must be replaced periodically; also, they take around 20 seconds to warm up and cool down which means the screen is completely dark for this phase. RPTVs are only manufactured by a handful of companies.

Best Home Theater Seating

How To Choose Suitable Home Theater Seating Theater style home seating

Do not be surprised when you head over to your friend’s newly decked out home theater to discover that he has literally substituted lawn chairs (yes, the squeaking fold-out aluminum kind) for those plush leather home theater loungers you had been expecting.

When it comes to setting up a home theater, last on the list of required accessories is usually the seating. Let’s face it, chairs are just too passive for their own good. High definition televisions, movie screens, the hi-fi surround sound setup that has been pain-stakingly wired and tested–these are the things that will deliver that highly-prized, streamed source of entertainment. They command great attention from prospective home theater owners. Only when the proud home theater builder discovers that those rows of custom seating won’t actually be delivered for a couple of months does it occur to him that something might have been overlooked in his zeal to put together the perfect movie or sports viewing room.

Do not make the same mistake. Like every other facet of home theater design, your seating requirements will need to be carefully thought out beforehand, so that you can order the right loungers or movie seats well ahead of time. Actually, it will prove well worth the effort to give this element of your home theater some serious consideration. The reason for this is that, unlike the visual and auditory aspects of movie viewing, which benefit from the sheer scale of your local movie house, your home theater seating can easily exceed the quality of movie house seating, as well as provide, though Bass Shaker technology, sensory experiences that you just cannot get otherwise. Without a doubt, making the right choice in home theater seating has the potential to improve your movie viewing experience tremendously.

So what are your choices? The least expensive option is to go with movie seats. These are like the ones found in the movie house. They bolt to the floor, and have the advantage that the seat can be folded vertically when you are no longer using them. Generally these chairs consist of solid metal frames, and have leather or microfiber upholstery. If you are planning on building a home theater with more than a dozen seats, simple economics suggests you furnish with movie seats. They also take up less space than a bulky lounger would.

For smaller home theaters, which might seat a family-sized audience of, say, 5 or 6, the home theater lounger is the preferred choice. This is where you can pull out all the stops and really create something that impresses the hell out of your friends. Loungers are built for comfort. They are big, have thickly-padded cushioning, and usually have either a manually activated footrest and reclining action, or these features come at the push of a button in the motorized models. Like the movie seats, the loungers will have cup holders in the armrests, so that you can stash popcorn or drinks close at hand. Some reclining models are known as wall huggers, meaning that they can be placed just a couple of inches in front of a wall and still allow reclining without a problem (which they manage by stretching forward rather than back). This is particularly useful if you intend to build your home theater in a room where space is limited.

One significant advantage the home theater lounger has over the movie seat is that they can easily accommodate a tactile transducer, or Bass Shaker as they are more commonly known. When a Bass Shaker is attached to a lounger, the shaker pumps vibrational energy into the chair at just those moments in the movie that significant action is taking place. This result is that you "feel" the scene much same the way the characters in the movie would. The effect can add dramatically to the viewing experience. One reviewer of the technology remarked that when the Cyberdyne headquarters was blown up in Terminator 3, he thought his couch was about to explode. Clearly this is an aspect of the viewing experience that plain old home theater surround sound cannot provide. Many lounger models offer the option of a built-in Wireless Bass Shaker, which is attached internally to the wooden backboard and driven by an RF signal from your audio amplifier. If you cannot afford Bass Shakers for all your chairs, consider getting one or two. Your family members can rotate between movies. But be warned, they will be the most fought over seats in the house!

When you go shopping for a lounger, look for quality. The high end models will be constructed of hardwood frames, such as oak, maple, or alder, that have been kiln-dried. What this means is that the wood has been heat-treated to extract excess sap and moisture. This process also keeps the wood from absorbing more moisture in the future, so as to ensure that the frame will not warp with age. Quality loungers will also be padded with high-density foam. Look for a chair description mentions cushioning featuring 2 lb foam padding and hand-tied springs. If you cannot quite determine which is the right seating choice for you, try looking for customer reviews of home theater loungers and movie seats. If you think, for instance, that you might be interested in a Rodeo home theater lounger, try typing "review of rodeo home theater lounger" into your favorite search engine (and when you have purchased chairs, consider writing a review of your selected seating for the benefit of others–you can find a place to do this below).

An important point to consider before placing any order for home theater seating is whether you can get the chairs into your home. Get out the tape measure and start measuring doorway and hallway widths. Make sure you can receive your furnishings! It would be a good idea to allow at least 6 inches clearance, and preferably more, when planning the delivery route into your home. When you order a section of seating, with 3-5 chairs, say, you will have the option of getting a straight sectional, or you can join the chairs with a slightly wedged armrest, imparting a gentle curve the sectional. If you have not designed your home theater with curved sections in mind, you may be forced to go with straight joins.

Last but not least, keep an eye out for models of seating that offer fun designs. For example, if you are building a home theater so that you can watch your favorite sporting events with friends, look for chairs that have the logo of your favorite NCAA team embroidered into the backrests. It all adds to the excitement when the time comes to switch off the light and kick back for a couple of hours of sheer home theater enjoyment.
